Dr. Wee Hong Ling was working as a NASA research fellow when she discovered her passion for ceramics during her pursuit of a Ph.D. in Geography. Since completing her doctoral degree in 2005, she has been a ceramicist who has been exhibiting her work internationally.
Hong Ling has exhibited in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, Korea, China and Singapore. Among her accolades are the First Prize at Ceramics Biennial at The New Hampshire Institute of Art (New Hampshire, USA), an Award of Excellence at the 3rd China-ASEAN Youth Creativity Competition at the Guangxi National Art Center (Nanning, China), an Honorable Mention at the Cheongju International Craft Biennale (Cheongju-si, Korea), and an award of Outstanding Achievement from the Society of Foreign Consuls in New York City.
Hong Ling’s works has been featured in numerous international publications and her ceramics are in the permanent collections of the National Gallery (Singapore), the Ministries of Law and Foreign Affairs (Singapore), the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park (Japan), the Fule International Ceramic Art Museum (China) and the Guangxi National Art Center (China). Her contribution to Singapore’s Visual Arts has not gone unnoticed; she was a finalist for The 2013 President’s Design Award.
Besides art-making, Hong Ling is also interested in bringing to fruition projects that have never been done before. In 2015, to celebrate Singapore’s Golden Jubilee in New York City, she organized Something To Write Home About, the first grassroots Singapore Arts Festival to showcase 50 artists and their works at The La MaMa Theatre.

Hong Ling: I will share about my transition from Singapore to New York, my journey from the sciences to the arts, the work that I create and why I’m still a die-hard Singaporean despite living half my life abroad.
